$40m wind farm proposed near Dunedin

The company behind a proposed $40 million wind farm near Dunedin will decide in six months whether to pursue the project. Windpower Maungatua, part-owned by listed company New Zealand Windfarms, wants to build a 40-turbine wind farm close to Mount Maungatua, near the Taieri Plain south of Dunedin, with a 20 megawatt (MW) capacity. Wind farm of national importance, Government says

The Government has tagged the Project Hayes wind farm as a project of national significance and will oppose nine of the 11 groups and individuals appealing the decision. Neighbouring wind farm could feed Tiwai smelter

Tiwai Peninsula could be next in line for a wind farm after Project Hayes and Mahinerangi, as the aluminium smelter moves towards renewable energy. Wind farm opponents join forces for appeal

The Save Central campaign to stop two large-scale windfarms transforming the landscape into an "industrial estate" will soon be going national. Turbine opponents vow to fight fast-track move

A group opposed to the construction of a wind farm already rejected by the Environment Court and High Court says it will challenge any move by Environment Minister Trevor Mallard to revive and fast-track the project.
